We all talk about physical exercise for a fitter body. But exercising the brain, the top-boss of oneself, is equally essential. For instance, learning a different language keeps the executive function of our brain in good shape.

Additionally Sylvain Moreno´s studies indicate that musical chords and scales work like a language as well. His exhaustive research conducted over a decade offered a definitive link between playing music and enhanced brain function.

He knew that seniors who had been professional musicians showed better mental function or acuity than those who had never played any instrument, including singing. Researchers have confirmed that by playing a musical instrument, seniors can reap significant improvements in brain function especially in terms improved self-control and longer attention spans. Researchers, amongst others, from the “Baycrest Sciences Rotman Research Institute” in Toronto found out that the constant practice of inhibiting one language while enabling the other keeps the executive function busier and more efficient.

There are many more methods of enhancing your brain activity and thus keeping neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Dementia at bay. And such methods or exercises become fun especially if you involve your friends, irrespective of their age, culture or gender.

Additionally studies on strengthening your brain show that working in short 25-30 minute bursts followed by a 5-minute break, boosts brain productivity by improving focus and reducing distractions.

This can be taken to every work you want to do: after a task move around for 5 minutes, relax, have some water, and then go back to work.

Also an effective way to learn something new is to teach it to someone else. Even the attempt to translate the material in your own words helps to gain new knowledge. Another method is to create a quiz after reading a book chapter or listening to a lecture.

Testing yourself or your friends creates and strengthens new neural pathways in the brain and subsequently aids memory. Teaching others improve brain activity.

To improve long-term recall, wait 1-2 days between study sessions. Researchers call this cognitive trick “the spacing effect”. In this way you will remember things for a long time.

About your body
Doing new body movements or exercises also increases your brain activity. For example, learning new dance steps or trying out a new set of hand leg coordinated movements stimulates the brain and also elevates your mood by boosting the production of endorphins.

Last but not least, you can keep struggling to remember a detail or a date, but you don´t have to. That brain training which I just explained to you will lead you to the right and needed info and will help you hang on to the information.

To summarize, train the brain is fun and even more when you involve others. Keep your curiosity alive & stay aware! This is probably the best formula for a long and healthy life with a clear mind.
